Proper Stocking Care

January 6, 2010 · 4 comments

Mr. S did excellent this year with gift giving for Christmas. I received these fantastic new stockings which I secretly was dying to have. I think he is rather happy he got them for me too, if you catch my drift. My collection of hosiery has grown substantially over the years, a genetic predisposition (I’m quite sure) I inherited from the Mum Dear. Pulling out my stockings is one of my most favorite comforts in winter weather.

Well, being as I was at work just yesterday, someone noticed my stocking-ed feet and said,” You know, I really want to wear hose, but every time I do I inevitably get a run.” “Really?” I exclaimed in amazement! “Don’t you know, you are supposed to put your hose in the freezer before wearing them?” And of course, she said she had never even heard of such a thing. Amazingly no one else in the entire office had heard of this either. Does no one know proper stocking care? Well, the Cupcake Goddess is on the case! Here’s a few secrets to proper stocking care:

Before wearing your stockings or hose put them in the freezer for a few days. I don’t know why this helps. Really I don’t. I can’t even give a good guess. But it works. Somehow, it makes your stockings stronger and they don’t run. Every time I’ve worn stockings that have not been put in the freezer first, they always snag, run, get holes and such without fail. Every time I do put my stockings in the freezer before I first wear them, they hold up like metal. You don’t need to put your stockings back in the freezer after the first wear, however if you do wash them you’ll need to put them back in the freezer after they dry.

After you’ve worn your hose quite a few times, they may be in need of a cleaning. To clean your stockings, you’ll need to handwash them with some bar soap, a tablespoon of baking soda and luke warm water. Line dry. After they are dry, put your stockings back in the freezer for a few days before wearing.

If you do happen to get a snag or a small run, stop it with clear nail polish. Unfortunately, this is not a very sightly maneuver if the run is in a visible spot. For me, runs and holes usually happen to start in the foot of my stockings.  To give stockings added strength in the toe I dabble a little nail polish on the big toe just before the first wearing which keeps them strong to last long.

I keep all my stockings in a my unmentionables drawer in a zippered pouch. This keeps them out of the way and in a safe place free of snags and such. Some of my hosiery is quite old and I’ve worn it so much and still, they have not run or snagged. It really works. Really, really. May your stockings hold up to this winter’s wear and tear and in the meanwhile keep your legs looking brilliant.

xoxo,

Sunni
