I’m really really surprised I did quite well through the weekend with Me Made June. Have to admit that Saturday (day 4), I almost didn’t get dressed, but I had made the commitment and now I have photos to prove that I did it too. Just checking in with a little update here, just in case you’re missing out on my daily updates via flickr. This week I am taking a little breather here on the blog to really hit the shop hard. I’ve got lots to do. Next week, I have something extra fun up my sleeve. I’m actually quite excited about it and it will be a series of posts that will go into the Sewing School. There that’s all I’m going to say.

It’s official, I’ve decided to take the plunge into Me Made June. This is going to be different for me this time around. If you recall, I participated in Self Stitched September ’10 and at that time in life, I was still working a full-time day job. It was hard and I definitely won’t forget my experience with it and the struggle to do it everyday. It’s different this time. I’ve taken the plunge into my own business and I work from home. I have a different set of problems to contend with now.

For starters, if at all I could be, I probably would be a slob. Yup, I’ll admit that staying in pajamas or sweats all day for me has become something of a reality. What’s worse, I don’t like how I feel at the end of the day when I do that, but yet, I still do it. The challenge is to wear things that are sophisticated and feminine but still comfortable. I’ve been in the slow process of revamping my wardrobe a bit to include styles that are comfy to wear and do my work around the house, but still things like dresses and skirts that I want to wear and feel girly in. My Ginger skirts definitely fall into this camp and I have a feeling that you’ll be seeing them a lot this time around. This also brings me to the point of what I hope to accomplish this Me Made June – and that is to realize the gaps I need to fill in my wardrobe as my career has changed. Maybe I really need to get a grip and realize that I do need a pair of stylish sweat pants when I stuff Tailor’s Hams and Seam Rolls. Maybe I’m in real need of an apron when I cut fabric – you know, silly stuff like that. After reading Gertie’s latest Feature Comment post, I was so amazed at how Elizabethe hit the nail on the head with how it works when you work from home. I intend to heed her advice and if you haven’t, definitely read this post, especially if you work from home.

I also swore that I would wear 2 me made items every day – which I’m going to amend by saying that I’ll wear 2 me made items everyday, when possible, for the month of June. I mean, what else am I supposed to wear if I decide to throw on my Naughty Secretary frock? It’s already all there, you know. I’ll be recapping my Me Made June adventures every few days along with my other regularly scheduled posts.

Are you participating in Me Made June? Even if you’re not, what kind of challenges do you face when getting dressed on a daily basis?

Happy Me Made June Everyone!

I wore this yesterday. Because I was going to see my dentist. And I really love my dentist. Gosh, he’s just got a real way with my teeth. We have to be good buds too, because I see him frequently, being the treat person that I am. No shots, just a little adjustment I needed on a previous crown. When he was all done, I arose from the chair and he even commented on my outfit. I know, he’s a real doll!

Oddly, nothing in this outfit, except the brooch is handmade. It’s all old stuff though. The jacket and skirt are from Anthropologie and the blouse is from Old Navy. What’s even more odd, is that I never wear this skirt but I love it. I have this cycle though. I’ll randomly splurge on some really outrageous item, like this skirt for example, never wear it for years and then one year, it just gets worn to death. Let’s see, I think this skirt is nearly 10 years old. Sheesh! I have so many articles like this. And judging from how terribly comfortable this ensemble was, I’ll be wearing it alot more often. Do you do that with clothes? What’s been in the closet for a really long time that all of sudden you’re ready to wear every single day?

A warm day, a picnic blanket, a little bit of the buble and Mr. S and I’ll be set for the rest of the warm days ahead.

Jacket – Anthropologie
Blouse – Old Navy
Skirt – Anthropologie
Shoes – Franco Sarto
Belt – thrifted
Brooch – Handmade, tutorial here

It was snowing the day I took these shots. I was just about to walk out the door with a flute friend to go and look at some duet music and thought I should, at least, take 2 or 3 shots of this somewhat superb outfit. OK, its superb to me. I’m actually not wearing the Bellas – can you believe that? Me neither! And even better I’m wearing my black trousers from the Trouser Sewalong and my Bow Blouse. Aren’t you proud? When I first put this outfit together, I wasn’t wearing the belt. I kind of felt….hmmm…blobby. But then I eyed this grey belt and cinched it all in and felt like I looked 10 lbs thinner. How is this achieved? I’m a belt-y person for this very reason.
I don’t know, but I find that it does which is why I wear those bracelets so much. Maybe that’s why red lipstick goes with everything so well. It’s like one of those neutral colors, but in the opposite way. Adds little splashes of pow! when you least expect it.

What are you wearing today? Are you headed out? Me made? Something you didn’t expect to pair together but found that somehow it really worked out and you love it?

I’ve been meaning to do outfit posts like these for awhile now. I find, sometimes more than others, that actually mixing in the clothes I make to my current wardrobe can be harder than making them. I have this very weird thing about saving garments for well….I don’t even know. I mean, it can only be worn on this certain day of the year if the sun is behind one cloud and the leaves are a certain color of green. You know. Well, hopefully you know what I mean.

This past Friday, I went home and felt sort of blah. I didn’t want to sew. I didn’t want to go out. I didn’t want to do anything. Kind of a little funk. I felt the same way Saturday and didn’t even get out of my pjs. EEEeek! In fact, I carried a blanket around with me all day too. Like I was sick or something, and I wasn’t. Sunday rolled around and a link on Casey’s inspirational post (some of my favorites that she does, because she’s always exposing me to new things) gave me a new perspective on my wardrobe. This girl’s got great style and even though I gather she’s not working a regular 9-5-er, she gets dressed and perks up everyday. There is something to be said for that. I was talking to Mr. S over the weekend and asked him why he got dressed that particular day and he said, “Because it makes me feel good about me.”

I’m not saying that I don’t feel good about me. I do. I’m just saying that the days when I put forth effort and get dressed I feel better. Case in point, my Saturday this past week. Staying in pjs all day can take its toll. Though somedays I’ll admit, it’s a necessity.

Tuesday, this week, I had taken the day off work. I thought it was the perfect time to actually get dressed and even take a few photos. I curled my hair, took a little more time on my make-up than usual and dressed up my Bella jeans with the stripey top and polka dot scarf. Nothing much really. But I felt good. And that’s a start. Here’s what I wore ~ Stripes and Polka Dots:

Button up striped shirt – Thrifted, though it is a JCrew

Polka dot scarf – something I picked up at TJ Maxx

Bella Jeans – made by me from this Burda Style pattern

Houndstooth shoes – Cole Haan (I got them for a steal when I used to work retail)

How do you feel about getting dressed on a day to day basis? What makes you get dressed? How do you feel when you get dressed? I would love to know your thoughts on this just to see if they are the same as some of my own.

xoxo,

I wasn’t able to post last Sunday, so this post is extra long as I decided to fit all of those days up until the end. What can I say? I’m utterly exhausted. It’s been a very good journey for me and one that ultimately I’m quite glad I took. I learned so much, not only about my wardrobe, but about myself. Tomorrow, I’ll be posting more about my thoughts and then you won’t hear anymore Self Stitched September ramblings.

Day 20.

Today is one of those days where nothing in my outfit quite matches each other and oddly enough somehow, it works. This skirt is a recent addition to my wardrobe, the result of sew-a-long I hosted on my blog. It’s made from the Jenny Skirt pattern from Burda Style. The corsage is also a little something I whipped up earlier this year. You can find the tutorial for the corsage here on my blog.

Skirt – from the Jenny Skirt pattern, Burda Style
Blouse – Target
Corsage – handmade by me
Belt – bought from an estate sale
Shoes – Chinese Laundry

Day 22.

On Day 22 I had to work during the day and attend a wedding that evening. This skirt you’ve seen and also my purple dress. The skirt is from McCall’s 5591 (Day 14) and the dress is from Newlook 6674 (Day 13).

Day outfit:
Cardi – Old Navy
Blouse – Old Navy
Skirt – self stitched from McCall’s 5591
Belt – Target
Shoes – Miz Mooz

Evening outfit:
Dress – self stitched from Newlook 6674
Shoes – Nordstrom Preview
Jewels – My great grandmother’s

Day 23.

This is the exact same outfit from Day 9. I love this cardi and it felt like the easiest and most perfect outfit to wear today.

Cashmere sweater – repurposed by me from a men’s cardigan
Trousers – thrifted
Shoes – White Mountain

Day 24.

An unexpected outfit for me today. I didn’t realize that this top and skirt went so well together. I’m in love with the color scheme of it. This blouse is one you have seen before, in Day 4, made from a vintage 1970′s sewing pattern.

Blouse – self stitched from McCall’s 6367
Skirt – Anthropologie
Shoes – Urban Outfitters
Belt – Target

Day 27.

You saw these pants in Day 2 and Day 17. They are pretty fabulous, have to admit. And unfortunately, the only pair of self stitched pants I own. I will be doing something about that this Fall, you can bet your bottom dollar. I thought it would be rather fun to give you a shot of these pants in action, I mean they can even swing…

Blouse – Banana Republic
Slacks – self stitched from the Bella pattern, Burda Style
Shoes – White Mountain
Sunglasses – Girlprops.com

Day 28.

Another day, another job, not just another dress. My naughty secretary scopes out the danger once more, even in heels, even in the dead of 90+ degree weather, even in fields of dry desert grass….A regular Nancy Drew. The stylish sleuth saves the day again!

Dress – self stitched from Simplicity 2724
Shoes – Urban Outfitters
Belt – American Eagle
Jewels – handmade

Day 30.

The final day of Self Stitched September. It has definitely been a September I will never forget. I’m wearing my Jenny skirt for the occasion and enjoying every last stitch of it. Happy Self Stitched September Everyone!

Blouse – Old Navy
Cardi – Old Navy
Skirt – self stitched from Jenny skirt pattern from Burda Style
Belt – Kohl’s
Shoes – Chinese Laundry

Not all the days are here as you can see. Some days were just too busy to take a photo. Some days I didn’t even get out of my pjs. Ah well! I’m happy!

Nearing the middle of Self Stitched September days has been interesting for me. I’m actually taking more interest in my make-up and hairstyle now. It’s been interesting to note that my behavior is much more centered around trying out new looks with my handmade outfits. Almost as if I’m enjoying getting dressed in my self stitched-ness. Imagine that. I really love how it’s all going. I actually haven’t been through all of my outfits yet. This is strange as I didn’t realize that I had quite this much. Well actually, I have quite a bit of Summer items and not too many Fall items. But since it’s still reaching the upper 90′s here, summery items are necessary.

Here’s the run-down of this past week!

This was Day 13.

I can safely say this is my most favorite dress that I have ever made. It was a long list of happy accidents and luckily all of them seemed to have worked. The fabric is superb. It’s held up well and still maintains a pretty pungent color. And I love this color on me. And don’t my yellow shoes just top the thing off?

Dress – Made by me from Newlook 6674
Earrings – Vera Wang Collection from Kohl’s
Bracelet – A Gift from my mother
Shoes – Nordstrom Preview

This was Day 14.

It was rather late when I could take this photo and being as that I tried a setting on my camera that I’m not used to, this was the only photo that turned out. I’m wearing skirt I made from McCall’s 5591. This skirt has gotten a lot of wear. It’s one of the easiest things to wear and makes for a very cool summer skirt which can be a must for the 100+ degree summers here.

Skirt – made from McCall’s 5591
Shirt – Target
Shoes – Crown Vintage
Scarf – Thrifted

Day 15 I took a sick day from work and didn’t bother to get out of pjs. So here is Day 16.

Yesterday was a sick day for me, but today, I’m back in action. This outfit was sort of haphazardly thrown together and I actually love the result. It’s still quite hot here during the daytime though in the mornings its become rather brisk. This outfit is perfect for this type of weather. The dress was made from two different sewing patterns. The bodice from McCall’s 6027 and the bottom is from Simplicity 2724. Slap that on with a thin cardi and a belt and you have a perfect indian summer ensemble.

Dress – a combination of McCall’s 6027 and Simplicity 2724
Sweater – Old Navy
Belt – Kohl’s
Jewels – Vintage
Shoes – Cole Haan

And now Day 17.

I haven’t quite been through all my outfits yet, but I wanted to wear these denim slacks once again. They are super comfortable. They go great for either a casual day or dressed up day at work. And they even look quite good next to a little beat up blue truck. Don’t worry, the truck is ours.

Slacks – Made from the Bella Pattern from Burda Style
Sweater – Anthropologie
Tank – Target
Shoes – Miz Mooz
Jewels – Handmade

And lastly Day 18.

This is a blouse that I made a few years ago. It’s a great and colorful top that I made for casual wear. It’s a from a Built By Wendy Simplicity pattern that isn’t even in the out of prints anymore. The number one thing I love about this top is that I lengthened the torso so that it could be tucked into low rise bottoms. I have a fairly long torso so I added a whopping 4 inches to this pattern. Still stops just short of the hips. Crazy.

Blouse – Built by Wendy Simplicity Pattern
Tank – Old Navy
Jeans – Rock and Republic
Jewels – Vintage
Shoes – Miz Mooz

Today unfortunately I’m not wearing any handmade item. It’s time for some deep cleaning around here and so I’m in grungies. I’ll be back on tomorrow.

Happy Self Stitched September! Can’t believe it’s almost over.

I have to admit that I really love featuring and wearing my handmade garments. For me, participating in this event has been a real eye opener. I’ve taken a lot more care with my appearance and have surprisingly, even to me, been really good about taking photos. There were two days this week that didn’t get photos. Bad days. Outside of that, I’ve been super good for 11 days. I hate to say it, but I’m quite proud of myself. I just gave myself a nice pat on the back for that too. Now where did we leave off…. Oh yes:

Here is Day 6.

It’s cleaning day today and thankfully I have this great utilitarian skirt that I wear when I clean. I made this from the Sew What! Skirts Book and have found it to be a very durable and easy to wear while houseworking garment. It has an elastic tie waistband which is ever so easy on the waist and makes housework, grocery shopping and other odd chores a dream.

Skirt – Made from Sew What Skirts, the first skirt in the book
Polo – Old Navy
Shoes – Merrell golf shoes (at least they look like golf shoes to me)

Here is Day 7.

If I do say so myself, and I do, I look especially dashing in this particular shade of green. This dress was made last year from the Socialite Dress pattern from Anna Maria Horner. I made it up in this very bright leaf green linen and had a little fun experimenting with some fabric painted leaves which I then free style embroidered by hand. It is a rather shapeless dress, though so comfortable and easy to wear. In other words, it has never been easier being green.

Shoes – Nine West
Bracelets – Handmade jewels I’ve picked up here and there

Here is Day 8.

It’s been one of those days for me. I really wanted better shots than the ones I ended up with, but the wind today was very strong. Too much for a tripod and camera. But, enough of that. This is a skirt that I’ve altered to fit me better. I have this terrible problem with skirts. As I have a rather thick waist, I never end up with a skirt that fits me well in the hips AND in the waist. The waist is always just a bit too snug. That was the problem with this skirt. It had gotten beyond uncomfortable and so I took out the zipper, trimmed down the waistband and put in an elastic waistband. Much better.

Skirt – Max Studio altered by me for a much better fit
Blouse – Express
Jacket – Target
Shoes – Franco Sarto

Here was Day 9.

This is a sweater I repurposed from a men’s cashmere cardigan. I’ve always wanted a cashmere sweater and this seemed to perfect opportunity to have one. Today is the first wearing. It was a little on the cold and windy side today and the the cashmere held up quite well without getting me too hot. In fact, it was simply a dream to wear. I love this piece and though at first I wasn’t quite so fond of the color, it seems to suit me quite well.

Trousers – thrifted
Shoes – White Mountain
Jewels – my great grandmother’s

Day 10 & 11 are sadly absent. Day 10 was a very bad day for me and it took Day 11 to recover. So here is Day 12.

Here on Day 12 I’m wearing a jacket from Simplicity 3538. I have to be honest and admit that though I love this jacket it never gets worn. It is truly a white elephant and its amazing that it’s white in color too! I will put this jacket on with everything and it never goes. But this look it can pull off which is good, cause that’s what I’m wearing today.

Camisole – Banana Republic
Jeans – Rock and Republic
Shoes – Miz Mooz
