the Sewalong for Beginners

I was pretty excited when the new Colette Patterns came out. OK, I was ecstactic. I was a pattern tester for these latest Beginner level patterns from Colette and I was pretty thrilled when I received them in the mail and found that the designs were not only easy, but also very flattering. Oh joy! It was hard keeping them a secret. What made keeping them a secret even harder is that I'm often asked what people (ok, women) should sew as their first project. Without fail, I always say an A-line skirt. And what is the Ginger pattern folks? Hip Hip Hip Hip Hooray! An A-line skirt!

So it is that I now announce the Beginner's First Ginger Sewalong. Yup. Not only that, but I've rounded up a few other bloggers to help me out. We've got inspiration coming up, fabric picking, historical perspectives and finishing details all thrown into the mix to get you beginning level sewers off to a rip roaring start! Now if you're not a beginner but still want to sewalong - this is fabulous! Plus I hope that you will comment and give tips for the beginners out there. A big community help if you will. This is going to be fun!

The official start date of the sewalong is May 16. Mark that down sewalongers! For two jam packed weeks we're going to focus on making a skirt for the first time, a successful experience. Let's see, what are you going to need? Well for starters, you need the pattern. And guess what? Sarai from Colette Patterns has generously offered a 20% discount on the Ginger pattern for all of the sewalongers for the month of May. Simply enter SUNNIGINGER (all caps please) in the discount code section at checkout. As for everything else you'll need, we'll talk about come May 16. Alright? Alright.

Here's a handy dandy button to proudly display wherever you want to:

And there you go! Get your wheels turning sewalongers! We're in for a lot of fun!

xoxo,

Sunni

  2. This is exciting! While I wouldn't say I'm a complete rank novice, I can still use all the help I can possibly get. I may end up too busy in May but I will definitely be following along with the posts if not sewing, too.

  5. Hey !

I'm in !! I am a total beginner - and still struggling with the collette crepe sew along that Gertie hosted (my first attempt at dressmaking). I have made like 48738947897 bodice muslins, none of them right. As such I feel before I lose my sewing mojo I need to attempt an easier project. This could be it ! Thank you !! xxx

  6. This sounds like great fun! I happily read along through the trouser sew-along but this seems much more like something I can actually do!

  7. Yay! I'm not a beginner, but I'm so excited to sew this pattern, and I have the perfect vintage cotton to do it in as well. I'm going to challenge myself by underlining my vintage cotton in some nice lawn or voile I think. Yay sewalong!

  8. You've just given me the reason (and discount code) to purchase this pattern I've been obsessing over. I will always love the A-line whether its trendy or not. Time to make my first garment for me in many years.

  10. Perfect! I already have pattern too! I've been making a lot of dresses, but I wasn't 100% happy with my last skirt so I'm looking forward to this sewalong. Especially because I can't decide what fabric to use so I'm eager for advice given in the sewalong.

  14. This sounds great! I started a blog this year because I want to sew more and learn more but keep getting stuck. I am hoping this sewalong helps me to finish something, have it fit pretty well, want to wear it and get some help along the way! Thanks for the great idea!

  18. I am in! I live in the UK so I have purchased my pattern from Ray Stitch, this way I know I will get it in time to start with the sew along. I am very excited it is my first colette patterm, everyone talks about them all the time but I try to use second hand patterns most of the time but I have just splashed out on 4 lovely patterns, sadly the violet top was out of stck. Can not wait!

  21. Hi! I bought this pattern at my local pattern store (Sewtropolis, check it out if you're in the Twin Cities) and they told me about this site. I've done a little sewing in the past, but I'm still definitely a beginner. Look forward to sewing along with you!

  23. The new blog is lovely and so is Ginger! I wish I had time to join in, but I just have no sewing time right now. Spent part of this evening writing a sewing-related post on my poor neglected blog and catching up on some sewing blog reading. I sure do miss it! Maybe soon...
