Bonus Post - Pocket Making

I almost feel a little silly doing a tutorial on how I made the pockets for my 1st Ginger. These are so easy you're going to want to pinch me. Nothing to em.

You will need:

  • a few scraps of fabric from your skirt fabric

  • a contrasting fabric - 1/4 yard is plenty

  • a button

You'll need to cut perfect squares the size you want your pocket to be + the seam allowance. I cut 6" squares and am using 1/4" seam allowance which will make these pockets 5.5" square. Make sense?

For one pocket, cut 1 square of each fabric - your skirt fabric and your contrasting fabric.

With right sides together, stitch the squares together leaving a 3-4" opening along one of the sides. Clip your corners and turn the pocket right side out. Press.

Slip stitch the opening closed. Fold one of the corners over to reveal your contrasting fabric and place your button on top and stitch in place. Pocket done!

Now to put the pockets on your skirt, I suggest doing this at the end or just before the hemming. Try your skirt on, grab some pins and position yourself in front of a mirror. Place the pockets where you think they look best for you and pin. See? So easy. Once you've positioned the pockets on your skirt, double check that each pocket is the same measurement away from the center front, the side seams and the waistband. Now topstitch along the edges. To make your pocket extra secure create a triangle at the top edges like this:

There you go! Have fun and don't hesitate to try out different shapes and sizes too!

Sunni

  5. You say it's a little embarrassing to do a tutorial on an easy pocket, I say THANKYOU! I am a beginner sewer and your website is the best I have come across so far. I just made a skirt for my 5 year old daughter using your pockets and I have ordered a Ginger skirt pattern online. Wish me luck!
